Fine food, drill rigs and horses: The Dome does it all

When you’re at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, you head for the large Dome to sample fresh produce, check out the District Exhibits display and perhaps even treat yourself to a Coon toastie. But did you know the Dome plays host to a range of other diverse events during the year?

Just a few months ago, Sydney Showground partnered with Reed Mining Events to host AIMEX, the largest mining exhibition ever held in Australia. The 42-metre Dome ceiling was perfect to showcase the latest in mining technology including drill rigs and a 143-tonne mining truck. Eight cranes weighing up to 200-tonnes each were used to mount machinery onto metal plates to protect the venue floor structure.

From trucks to trotting, the Dome has now been transformed into a horse arena, playing host to EQUITANA, the largest equine event in the Southern Hemisphere. Three hundred cubic metres of sawdust and 2000 tonnes of soil were brought in to create the arena, as well as seating for over 6,000 people.

But Sydney Royal Easter Show fans, don’t despair. Soon enough, the Dome will once again undergo a make-over and be transformed back into the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome, full of Australia’s best produce including Cattlemans’ Reserve Wagyu beef, Morpeth Sourdough bread and the fine sparkling wines of Petersons’ Champagne House Ltd.
